My blog is being replaced by Facebook

Hello to all,

To those who haven't noticed, I haven't made a post for more than a month.
The facts are simple, usually I do posts to show photos or videos of places where I've been and normally there isn't much to say. What has been happening is that I'm posting the photos and videos links in Facebook, but I still use Picasa Web and Youtube to host the photos and videos respectively.
People can subscribe to feeds from these applications:Having this said, I will only come back here when I need to "say" something, that may take weeks, months or years... don't know...

Well "see" you all next time!

Geneva Pre-Parties

People,

Here I am with a couple of new photos, this time in the Geneva Pre-Parties, yes there are two parties here, the Pre-Parties, more soft and less important, and when these are over, the real Geneva Parties start :) Interesting naming convention...
I went alone, no big deal and not that much fun or no fun at all... but since everything was new to me it was interesting to see. I found two persons that I know, which was also good.

Here are the photos:

A really hard bike journey

Hello People!

This last weekend I went to give a bike tour with my friend Pascal, he lives close to the Jura, so the tour was mounting one of the hills of the Jura... as you can imagine, it was hard has hell!!
I was not able to mount everything on bike, I mounted on foot for about 2Km.
Now the big question: Was it worth it? Yes it was! The view from top is really beautiful, from there we can see:
  • Almost all the Geneva lake

  • The Geneva water jet

  • The Divonne lake

  • Lots of villages that I don't know the names (either in Switzerland or in France)

  • The Alpes, it was petty that the sky was not clear, because from there we could see the Mont Blanc

  • The Salève (which is the other mountain from the other side of Geneva)

  • Lots of anthills

  • Some cows

The other fun part was role down the mountain :) We caught a really good speed, which gave a good adrenalin injection.
Once down the mountain we went to see a water fountain, I have some pictures of it, but I could not locate the place on the map, I've asked my colleague to see if he helps me locate it.

Well that was it, here's the photo album:
First Bike Tour in the Jura

Ciao,
dfm

Update 2009/07/17: The water fountain photos are now located on the map. Thanks Pascal!
Update 2009/07/18: Since Sunday that I've not been able to sleep right because I didn't knew the ant species name, but today I can sleep well! According to my biologist colleague Crespo, the ant that I photographed is Formica rufa (they do seem alike...). Thanks Crespo!! :)

SLB made me a surprise

Hello again,

I didn't expected to be here so soon, but here I am.
To introduce the subject I just want to let you know, for the small minority that doesn't already know, that my soccer club is Sport Lisboa e Benfica (www.slbenfica.pt), simply SLB, or "GLORIOSO SLB" like we like to call it.
So once that I'm emigrated in Geneva and I don't see them live for a long time, they decided to make me a surprise by coming to perform their pre-season in Meyrin, about 500 meters from where I work :)
This is it! Today I went to see one training session, and from the map that is with the album you will see the place where I work, which is near the crossing of Rue du Mandement with Rue de Meyrin is really close to the place where the photos were taken.
Here's the album:

Hasta la vista,

St Peters Parties @ PMS & DMB Day @ Montreux

Hello my friends!

A little bit more than two weeks have passed since my last post, but a lot has been going on!! Well... a lot means more busy weekends than any other thing.

To start, I took holiday on June 26th and 29th, this made me a 4 day weekend. Friday I had dinner with some old friends from Credito Agricola, then I went to the Lisbon Airport to get my brother (that I didn't see for about one year), and we went straight to Porto de Mós, once there was a party there in MY castle (the one that is the background of the blog title). I do like to call it MY castle since it is about 100m from my parents house, the house where I grew up.
This was the first weekend of the St. Peters Parties, my village traditional parties. This is the best time of the year for me, where we see almost all of our friends, and there are even friends that we only see once a year in these parties! It's long nights that last until the sun comes up, always outside in the fresh air! Well sometimes it rains, like it happened this year, but happily it was not cold. So as you may guess it was there that I went Saturday and Sunday night :) Monday was the day that I came back to Geneva, so no big deal to tell.

The next weekend, July 4th and 5th, Rita came to visit me in Geneva, once it was the Dave Matthews Band concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival :). So Saturday, beggining of the afternoon we went to Montreux, where we went to see Freddie's Statue, then we walked near to the lake until the Château de Chillon. We visited the castle, it is very nice and well maintained. I want to thank to the friends that told me that the castle existed and that it was really worth to visit. After the visit we went to eat something and then went to the concert.
This day of the festival had three groups, started with Steely Dan, then DMB and finally Chickenfoot. We were only interested in DMB, and since we wanted to be sure that we would stay in a good place we were there when the doors opened. Steely Dan passed, and then came DMB and the fun began!! :) They entered the stage in a very calm way, without playing any music, they thanked the applauses and then they started!! Excitement to the top! They played several musics from their new album (Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King), which is, for me, the best album they have, then they also played some older songs. Dave talked a little bit, made some jokes, told that the song Alligator Pie was made to put his younger daughter name in a song, because she asked him "Daddy when you gonna put me in a song". DMB seemed to be really enjoying the concert, once they were almost always smiling, and Dave was always dancing in his "strange way" to dance :) The only sad thing about the concert was that no photos could be taken... Finally DMB finished and we went away, we were already tired and Chickenfoot was not of our interest.
I have some photos of this excellent day that we passed in Montreux here:
DMB Day @ Montreux

Wel... and that was it for the last two weekends.

See you soon,

I vs Salève (and more...)

And the winner is... ME!!!

Yesterday, Saturday, I decided to go to the top of Salève, which is a mountain in France that goes up to 1400 m (according to this article from wikipedia).
It isn't very far, but it's mounting all the way, it was hard as hell, I had to find my rithm and mount all the way without stopping. I only stopped one time, after 25 minutes always mounting, because I didn't came in the correct rithm, but after that I didn't stop until I got to the top (more 50 minutes mounting). After being on top I could move around and visit some places there, but since I was a little BIT tired I just climbed a little bit more near to a high view point to take a look around. I think that next time I will go and visit other places there, when I'm more used to climb :)
Some numbers:

  • Climb lenght: 9Km

  • Time to climb: 1h24m

  • Time to descend: 15m

  • Maximum speed: 63.2Km/h

  • Average speed: 13Km/h

  • Total Km: 27.1Km

  • Total time: 2h05m

Today, Sunday, I had a very nice barbeque with Portuguese people that are in the Geneva, Lausanne and in between region. We also tried to play a little bit of volley, but I don't think that I can say that we really arrived to play it...
I didn't took photos, but there are some in facebook, I don't know if everyone is able to see them, because I don't understand nothing from it... I just registered to be able to see the photos and that was it.
So for this I leave you only with the photos from my victory over the Salève! :)

Vacations @ Madeira & Porto Santo

Hello!

Now that the vacations are over and that I have already worked for some days it's time to chill out and remember the good moments that we've passed.
I will summarize the days one by one:

Day 1
  • Arrival to Funchal

  • Visit to: Curral das Freiras, Camara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol, Cabo Girão, Calheta, Paúl da Serra and Encumeada.

  • Information: Cabo Girão is one of the highest cliffs in Europe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabo_Girão).

  • Best moment: See the cows near Paúl da Serra.

Day 2

  • Visit to: Ribeiro Frio, Faial, Porto da Cruz, Santana, Pico Ruivo, S. Jorge, S. Vicente and Funchal.

  • Best moment: Walk near the river in Ribeiro Frio

Day 3

  • Visit to: Paúl da Serra, Porto Moniz and Seixal

  • "Levada do Caldeirão Verde" (Caldeirão Verde Walk/Hiking).

  • Information: "Levada" means a man made water channel, and these are very well known because they go across beautiful paths into the mountain/forest.

  • Best moment: The Levada/Walk

For me this was the best day.
Here is a video that we made while walking:

Day 4

  • Dolphin watching.

  • Visit to: Jardim Tropical Monte Palace.

  • Best moment: Going into the water when we were in the sea... at least there I didn't get sick!

We also tried to swim with the dolphins, but those guys are always in a rush to go somewhere, so once they were always moving and we couldn't stop to swim with them.
Apart from this, we saw a turtle that was hurt and kind of stuck to a rope connected to a bag, the skipper stopped the boat and once I get motion sick, I almost threw up over the turtle... while I threw up, they managed to move the boat around to get the turtle from the other side. Yes they moved the boat around to get the turtle, it was not me who tried to swing to the other side of the boat I was busy throwing up and didn't even had the strengths to get up...
For those who do not know, I LOVE turtles, in normal circumstances I would be the first to go and grab it, but in this case, I only saw the turtle when we where back to land!
I love animals, I think that I wouldn't mind to be a biologist, but this boat trip made me remind that I could never be a marine biologist... unless they drop me in the sea by helicopter!
About the turtle, last Friday, May 29th, exactly one week after we caught the turtle, I sent an email to the guys from "Rota dos Cetaceos" (www.rota-dos-cetaceos.pt), the company that took us to see the dolphins, to ask how the turtle was. It seems that she (I like to use he/she for animals) is healing well and should be released soon.

Here is the video with the dolphins:

Day 5

  • Visit to: Porto Santo island.

  • Best moment: Chat with the old friend (see photos)

This had everything to be a great day, visit the island and finish in the beach, we managed to visit the island, but 5 minutes after we set ourselves in the beach it started raining...

Day 6

  • Beach in: Porto Santo island

  • Best moment: The beach and the special photo session :)

Day 7

  • Visit to: Camacha, Machico, Caniçal and Santa Cruz

  • Return back to mainland.

  • Best moment: Small tour close to the Ponta de São Lourenço

Well that was it, I leave you with the photo album:
Madeira

A busy beginning of vacations...

Here I am again,

I had a busy weekend with the visit of my aunt, I had to do the "usual" tours to well known places like Geneva and Annecy.
We were lucky because the weather was really good with lots of sun and a warm temperature, we got tanned! :)
Here is the album, that includes two photos taken on friday with the path from the mechanic to the client which is a very pleasant walk:
May 15th to 17th

Well, for now it's finished, tomorrow start the real vacations!

Cheers!

This week's summary

Hello again,

This last week was pretty much normal with work, so there are no big news.
The landscape from my place at work has changed and here's an updated photo:

As you can see there is almost no snow in the top of Jura.

Yesterday I saw the movie Into the Wild, very good film, apart from the ending... and the music, done by Eddie Vedder, was almost perfect for every situation. Since the movie didn't had an happy ending, that left me in a shitty mood, so I went for a run, which brought me back to the good moods and spirits :)
Running solves many problems, specially those that cause us headaches!
Today I was all dressed up and prepared to go on and ride my bike, but I had a very unpleasant surprise... I had a flat tire :( Now I have to find someone to fix it, or buy the material and fix it myself, but this second hypothesis is more difficult once that I've not the material here. Since I didn't ride my bike, I went for a walk in St Julien, always paying attention if there was a bike store somewhere :). After my walk I came home and picked up the guitar to practice a little bit more. That's pretty much it for my Sunday, I will also hear a little bit of Dave Matthews Band and eventually practice some lyrics, so that I'm more prepared for their concert :)
And that's all for this week.

This next week my aunt will be here some days and then I'll go on vacation for almost a week and an half, so it will take long before I blog again.

See you next time,
dfm

... and the CUmmander went away

Hello again,

Lately I've updated the blog a lot, let's see how long that will take :)

As I said, we went to Zurich, we met our friend Roque, in the afternoon we gave a quick tour in Zurich, specially near the lake and by night we went to a friends concert.
I don't know the name of the band, I only know the name of the singer which is Dimitri, so I'll call it Dimi's band :) it's an hip-hop group that sing in Swiss-German, which means that basically I didn't understand nothing that was said, I can even name the two words that I understood "icy icecream". :) Apart from that the concert was nice and it sounded cool. I didn't even know that I could enjoy hip-hop and worse than that I didn't even know that I could enjoy Swiss-German sang hip-hop!
The worst of the night was the trip to the bus, once we were late, we had to run, that was not a pretty good experience, specially for someone that doesn't run for more than 6 months. I don't know how long we ran (it wasn't that much) but for me it seemed like a marathon :)
I leave you with the photos:
CUmmander last weekend

For those of you that are asking: Why doesn't he has a photo with his friend CUmmander?
The answer is:
  • If you know the CUmmander why are you asking??

  • If not: Because he didn't allowed me to. And yes he would become very angry if I posted a photo without his permission.

BTW: I think that he doesn't even know that I have posted his name as CUmmander, actually, probably he has no idea that I posted something saying that he came here... let me wait and see if he says something...

See you,

May 1st - What to do? WORK!!

Hello,

It's May 1st, holiday in several countries, but not in Switzerland, here it's a regular working day, although some employers "give" the day to their employees, which is not my case :(
Once I'm waiting my computer to finish some work that it's doing for more than half an hour I decided to come here post something.

Still regarding the last post title, I forgot to mention that the Iron Man part was also because I rarely get sick, and if I get, I get well quickly :) that's a good thing that I have. Of course that I remembered to say this now, because I had some troubles two days ago, but I'm ok now :)

This weekend me and the CUmmander will visit our friend Roque in Zurich, once there is also a friend there that will give a small concert. I think that the language in which he sings or raps is mainly Swiss-German, so I won't be able to understand a thing... So What! (Metallica) :) Well... he also told me that sometimes he also sings in English.

Well that's it for now, I think that my PC already finished it's work.

See you,

Iron(ing) Man

Hello,

Today I've ironed... damn it's hard and takes a lot of time! Time that I could use to play guitar or learn French, but it's something that has to be done!
(This was the only part that is related to the subject.)

What have I done? Well, basically the same, one bike tour, learning guitar and French.
Some of you know some of you don't, but our CUmmander has came to visit me, so this week I'm not alone, at least not all days.
With the CUmmander we went for a tour in Geneva, Chamonix, Megève (for him to see a little bit of snow), Annecy and Evian-les-Bains.
I leave you with some photos of these places and of the bike tour:

Mid-April News

Hello people!

I'm back for a quick post, this time in English.

  • Why English? Well, that was a question I always had since the beginning, the main reason not to write in English, was because my parents couldn't read it.

  • What made me change my mind? The other day I was talking with my father, who said to me that he had received a spam email and he didn't immediately delete it. He said that he liked to "try" to read it to see if he was able or not to understand the English. So I thought, if I write these posts in English, my father doesn't need to read spam/dangerous emails to practice his English, he reads my posts instead and if he doesn't understand I can always explain him... I or anybody else.

  • Apart from the reason above, my friends here can't read Portuguese (not that I have that many friends up until the moment), and this way my blog is opened to the world!

Almost three weeks have passed since my last post and trip to Portugal and life has been quite busy for me, either playing guitar, studying French, reading or working. Only in the weekends I have some more free time.
About different/interesting things that I've done, on Sunday April 5th, since it was a sunny day I went for a bike tour around the Geneva lake, it was quite nice and I did almost 40Km (Yes 40km!, but here there are no hills to climb, it's everything plain, so it's much easier to make lots of Kms), here is the album:
Bike Tour In Geneva

In Geneva it was holiday the April 10th and 13th, which made the weekend a four day weekend. This way me and my friend Roque, that is also in the chocolates country, went to Milan for the weekend. It was really cool, day & night, and there are really interesting things to see down there. The only thing that we didn't found so cool was the traffic... since we live in Switzerland, here everything is well defined, limited and there are few situations where we see someone breaking the law, down there I would say that there are few situations where we see someone not breaking the law (of course that I'm exaggerating!). On our way back we also passed by Como, an Italian city which also has a nice lake. Here's the album:
Milan

Well I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them :)

See you,

A minha dúvida é: Quem é que me deu o livro?

Long Time no See...
